The Soviet Award System
For the first time, this book examines in the systemic sequence the history of institution and development of Soviet award documents, terms and conditions as well as practice of presenting various awards by the top-ranking Soviet authorities in the period of 1918 to 1991, including the Colors, orders, medals, prizes and honorary titles. The book is also the first to introduce many documents for scientific use, to provide examples of order / medal statute violations, to describe practices of deprivation of USSR awards and decorations, and to show previously unpublished statistics about awardees. Separate sections are devoted to such rarely discussed periods and practices in the Soviet awards system history as presentation of "longevity service" orders and medals, provision of monthly pays to state decoration holders, permanent unsuccessful efforts of the Political Bureau of the CPSU to "improve" the Soviet awards system by reducing the number of awardees. The present research may be useful to historians, history teachers, museum workers and archivists, collectors and wide variety of people interested in the Soviet and Russian history.
