From 1955 onwards it managed to acquire state-of-the-art military jets with the aid of the USAF. The resurrection of german military aviation was marked by new fighter wings named after famous german aces of WW 1 like JG 71 "Richthofen", JG 31 "Richthofen" and AG 51 "Immelmann".
