The exercise REFORGER 88 and its combat exercise "Certain Challenge", together with the Air Force exercise "Crested Cap 88" was conducted in Spring 1988. The main exercise area was Bavaria, Baden Würtemberg and Hessen. It was the 20th REFORGER exercise since the start of this typ in 1969. It differed from all previous exercises in size. More than 125.000 american soldiers accompanied by German, Canadian, French and Danish forces. It was the last exercise in that size after the end of the cold war.
